How does the character search for solace, purpose, and/or redemption in this story?

In this story, two friends try and find peace from the war that they are in. They go fishing to find solace and purpose, because they don't want to be associated with the war thats going on at the time. All they wanted to do was stay away form it, but it came to them. They end up being captured and killed because the enemies thought that they were spies. All they wanted was to live their lives like it was before the war.

How does the character's experience reflect the historical period in which his/her story is told?

The historical period takes place when the French battled Prussia. The two friends are from France during the 1870s. During this time there was hardly enough food and money. Most people were poor or they had to be in the war fighting for there lives. The two friends were tired of this lifestyle and wanted to do there own thing, like fish, just like how it was back then.

How does the character's experience in the story symbolize the theme of survival and the human spirit?

The characters experience survival in a way, because they tried to survive the war and kind of stay away from it. They didn't want to be caught in the middle, but thats exactly what happened. They got caught right in the middle and got shoot because of it. Their human spirit was to make peace and just be friends. They thought that the war was stupid and that there was no point in fighting for something so stupid. And when they got caught they showed how true they are and how they wouldn't let anyone down, especially each other, so they ended up dying together.

The Pit and The Pendulum

How does the character search for solace, purpose, and/or redemption in this story?

In this story, the character tries to find solace by trying to find a way out of this prison. He tries to stay alive and makes plans to escape his doom. In his room was a huge pit that he could easliy fall in, but he doesn't cause he found it and was very cautous about where he was going. They feed him food and water, but the water was poisoned and knocked him out. Through all these tortures, all he could do was try and survive and not give up.

How does the character’s experience reflect the historical period in which his/her story is told?

The character's experience did reflect a lot on the time period because he was being tortured during the Spanish Inquisition around the 1800s. During this time they did a lot of torturing to the prisoners and they locked them up in dungeons to suffer. Also during this time period it shows how smart they were, like how they confused the prisoner by changing the room and how they moved all the walls and made it different. Obvisously these tortures don't still happen to this day.

How does the character's experience in the story symbolize the theme of survival and the human spirit?

The character experiences survival and human spirit by surviving all these tortures and getting out of prison. Even though they tortured him physically and mentally he kept on fighting and didn't give up. This showed how strong his human spirit was and how he didn't let anything stop him from making it out of there. He knew from the beginning that he was going to get out of there, because he had this drive to come out and he used his inteligence to escape.

How does the character search for solace, purpose, and/or redemption in this story?

For the most part, Eckles was trying to find redemption at the end of the story, when he goes back to the future and finds out how much he had changed the future. But mostly he wasn't trying to find a purpose or solace. He just wanted everything to be the same as how he left it before he went on this mission.

How does the character's experience reflect the historical period in which his/her story is told?

The character Eckles, went back in time to hunt dinosaurs, so obviously he came from the future. The travel guides told Eckles not to leave the path, but Eckles got scared and ran off the path without thinking. This changed the future because he ended up killing a butterfly which supposedly caused a chain reaction to the future. This ended up changing history. So this story took place in the future and in the past, so it has more then one historical period. When he was in the past he saw many dinosaurs and the surrounding was very different then it was in the future. When he was in the future everything was new and there were no dinosaurs.

How does the character's experience in the story symbolize the theme of survival and the human spirit?

This story does symbolize survival because Eckles was trying to survive from staying away from the huge dinosaur. Even though he ended up chickening out from shooting the dinosaur, he in facts runs away and falls off the path without noticing. Because of this he killed a butterfly which changed the future, and at the very end he dies for what he had done. So what he thought was being save actaully killed him at the end. All he had to do was do what he was told and not run away.

A Prisoner Who Wore Glasses

How does the character search for solace, purpose, and/or redemption in this story?
In this story, A Prisoner Who Wore Glasses, the character Brille tries to find solace and redemption by trying to gain freedom for himself and other black people. He goes to prison because of what he believed in and he thought that he could make a difference, but instead they throw him in jail. In the jail, he stands for what he believes in and no one can change his mind. He tries to teach Hannetjie how to treat everyone equally, even though it gets him in trouble but at the end it works. Hannetjie ends up helping everyone on planting and working.

How does the character's experience reflect the historical period in which his/her story is told?
Brille's experience did reflect on his historical period because at this time period blacks and whites weren't treated equally, and they would throw people in jail just like how they did with Brille. And for no reason, they just threw people in jail because of what they belived in or how they looked and acted. This made people want to rebel and try and make equality. The racism at this time era very very exterme. Brille wanted everyone to be treated equalliy and not have to worry about being harassed by others. In this time people tried to free racsim like Nelson Mendela, but to this day people still experience racism.



How does the character's experience in the story symboloize the theme of survival and the human spirit?
Brille symboloizes hope, because he had hope through out the whole experience and nothing could take him down. He stood for what he believed in and didn't let anyone take it aways from him. Just because they threw him in jail because of his color, he didn't let that stop him, he still did what he wanted and just kept thinking that he needs to make it out of here to be with his family. Survival was the key for Brille. He just believed in what he thought was right and didn't care what trouble he got in. He pretty much just wanted to find a way to survive. He didn't believe it was fair that he got sent to jail because he was black or because of his believes. He just wanted to be free and be with his family at the end.
